HTT (Here’s The Thing): Learning Pottery

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to learn how to throw pottery on the wheel. There is something that feels so organic and natural about creating something by hand that you can use to serve food.

So, I signed up for a class a couple months ago and have been making clumsy attempts at structurally sound pottery for weeks!

I just finished my first class and got to do some fun experimenting with different shapes and glazes. These are my first few awkward sugar bowls. I love the blues and greens and the drippy natural look of the glazes on the pots. I’m looking forward to learning more and improving in my next class – starting tomorrow!

In the meantime, I look to Etsy for a few of the shapes and pieces that inspire me to get better with practice: one, two, three.

Have you ever wanted to start a new hobby? Where do you draw inspiration?

  1. Hope to see you in Maine anytime. Since reading your posts and seeing what you are interested in I am making a list of places that you might like to explore!

  2. Hurray for you! I love to throw pots, love the whole process. Glazes are my downfall, things tend to look awful and feel like sandpaper. Your pots are great, you are well on your way to mastering the craft!

    1. Why, thank you so much, Anne! I’m having a lot of fun learning – the whole process just feels so relaxing. I’m hoping to make some larger pieces in this next class, I hope we’ll have a chance to see you on one of our junk adventures this summer!
