Farmhouse Friday: Brick Beauties

There’s something special about brick houses as they grow old with age, with a patina that can’t be faked. So today, instead of sprawling country and clapboard farmhouses, we’re dreaming of in-town brick beauties.

Hudson Valley: Catskill, NY

This brick octagon house is one of a handful scattered across America, and I remember admiring a similar house in Westfield, NY near where I grew up. The unique shape makes for a dramatic spiral center staircase and floor plan.  I love the porch that wraps around the front three sides and the black shutters on all of the windows.

New England: Portland, ME

This stately brick beauty in downtown Portland, Maine features amazing period details. I love the intricate moldings on the fireplaces and the original knotty pine wide plank floors. The kitchen features a hammered tin ceiling and a beautiful old wood stove to cozy up next to on chilly Maine winter evenings. The clawfoot tub, lovely stained glass, and beadboard wall paneling make for a lovely bathroom. Portland is less than 2 hours north of Boston and it’s amazing how much more affordable real estate can be in this smaller scale New England city.
